The Ultimate Hospital Bag Essentials Checklist:

My dad, who is always making lists, says “a job well planned is a job half done”. When I was younger, I used to respond with more than a little irritation “yes but you spend so long planning you don’t have time to do the job in hand!”

With time I have realised there is a happy medium. That is to get someone (one of those rare good organisers ideally) to do the planning and list making for you!

As someone with a long-term health issue, I’ve frequently been in and out of hospital since my teens and had many an opportunity to refine my ideal kit bag, whether for day visits or overnight stays.  After sharing experiences with others, including mum’s ex maternity ward, the idea for Hugbag was born. But more on that later; if you are looking for a pre-prepared hospital stay essentials list for mum, grandad, friend, yourself or whoever… then read on for your ultimate hospital bag organiser.

False teeth for hospital bags

From personal experience and patient feedback, plus many more positive reviews, we are confident that the contents of the Hugbag are the ultimate list for going into Hospital for whatever reason. Furthermore, there is a reason for the inclusion of every item in them!

Here is an in depth look at the thought behind some of the recommended items included in the overnight bag.

  • Ear plugs – Hospitals are noisy places, day and night. Sometimes a little peace is needed.
  • Earphones – some good earphones are always needed to listen to music/audiobooks etc
  • Cotton mask – in these days of Covid a facemask is a must, and never a bad idea generally.
  • Hand sanitiser – ditto with the hand sani
  • Lip balm – the only place I ever get dry lips is in hospital – use as a precaution, prevention is better than cure!
  • Tissues – the tissues in some hospitals are like sandpaper. You don’t need a sore nose too!
  • Sweets – some treatments give a nasty taste or dryness in your mouth, sweets can help!
  • Face, hand, multi-use anti bac wipes – I have coined a term ‘feeling hospitaly’. This a combination of feeling dirty and sweaty and just unpleasant. Wipes help to prevent and treat this never-before formally documented condition!
  • Puzzle book – good for relieving boredom and keeping sane during enforced rest.
  • Pen – the above is of very little use without a pen 😊
  • Tooth hygiene kit in travel case – Some toothbrushes provided by hospitals are very small and to tell the truth, a little pointless. Furthermore, the toothpaste provided by the NHS can be not the nicest. The answer to this conundrum is to bring your own – a taste from home.
  • Toiletries bag – conditioning shampoo, shower gel, soap. Nice toiletries can help no-end with the afore mentioned ‘feeling hospitaly’ condition.
  • Deodorant – as above.
  • Hairbrush – I generally forget mine when going to hospital – this is very irritating so makes sense to have a dedicated one stored in your grab-bag.
  • Eye mask – hospital wards are rarely completely dark. Plus sleeping during the day with all the lights on is a challenge.
  • We also include a personal checklist in our Hugbags as we know everyone is different – jot down all the items which are personally important to you. So, you don’t even have to think about anything…and your hospital stays can be that little bit better!
